Certified Used Car or CPO Fraud

The major car makers all advertise that their “Certified Pre-Owned” (“CPO”) used vehicle programs, through which they and their dealers sell pre-owned vehicles that they represent have been scrutinized by thorough certification to certify that the can earn the moniker of “certified” used car, which all the car makers claim are “like new” cars and trucks. To meet CPO standards, a used car or truck should have low mileage, a title that is clear, and must be a mult-part inspection performed by a mechanic certified by the manufacturer such as a 172-point inspection and reconditioning.

Most consumers don’t know, that the car makers all delegate the inspection and reconditioning to their own dealers. We have found that on occasion, some unethical or careless dealers, who are eager to earn the extra profit that goes with selling a CPO car or truck, certify rebuilt wreck or flood vehicles that do not meet CPO criteria.

Consumers also don’t realize that most car makers will not stand behind the certification and typically false claim that the certification inspection is entirely the responsibility of the used car dealers. They claim that the consumers have purchased a used car dealer certification and not the certification of large multi-national corporation.
